THE DISPATCH

The Beginning

Glyn Dix was a fairly unremarkable man until he raped and murdered his landlady. He was jailed, released, and killed again.

The Murders

Pia Teresa Mary Overbury
Pia Teresa Mary Overbury

Pia Teresa Mary Overbury was 33 years old when she decided she wanted her husband killed. After her original 2 hit men backed out, Overbury hired family friend Glyn Dix to shoot hubby James. Instead, Dix decided to kill her and “put her out of her misery”.

He shot Overbury on October 2, 1979 and partially buried her the woods in nearby Carters Grove. She was found on October 20. She had been tied up and raped and shot in the back/head with a shotgun.

Dix Charged in Overbury Death

On October 28, 1979, 26 days after her murder Dix was charged with Overbury’s murder.

Guilty Plea for Overbury Murder

In a surprise move during the trial, on July 22, 1980, Dix entered a guilty plea for the murder of Overbury. Dix was sentenced to life in prison.

Hazel Holmes
Hazel Dix (nee Holmes)

While in jail, Dix became acquainted with Adam Langford, an inmate serving time for driving offences. After being released, Langford would visit Dix in jail, being driven to the prison by his mother, Hazel Holmes (hereinafter referred to as Holmes). Neither Langford nor Holmes knew what Dix was in prison for. Eventually, Dix was released from prison on a life license, similar to parole for life.

Dix married Holmes and moved to Redditch, Worcestershire. In their home, on June 19, 2004, he stabbed her to death after an argument about the television. Dix then dismembered her in the kitchen, using multiple tools to cut her body into 16 pieces.

He was found standing naked next to her body by Langford. Police found portions of Holmes in a tin pan in the oven. Dix was arrested the same day. Holmes was 54 when she died.

Guilty of Holmes's Murder

On December 17, 2005, Dix was found guilty and sentenced to life in Ashworth Hospital. Ashworth Hospital is a high-security psychiatric hospital 10 miles northeast of Liverpool. It is designed for patients with psychiatric health needs whose treatment requires a high level of security.

Dix’s Death & Lack of Notification

Hazel’s family weren’t told about Dix’s death in 2014. They found out almost by accident in 2020. A Holmes family member wrote to Dix asking for an explanation as to why he dismembered her. The letter for Dix was returned with the notation “no longer here”. In the summer of 2020, officials finally explained that Dix had died six years previously.

Noted: Some non-news stores indicates he died in January 1, 2014, and while I can find support for his death year, I have not yet found a trustworthy source for the month and day. Therefore I cannot conclude he died on January 1.
