The Murders
Nicholas Wright
- December 12, 1997
- Portsmouth
Junior rating Nicholas Wright was 19 when his Royal British Navy destroyer, HMS Edinburgh, was docked in Portsmouth. Wright took leave and headed to Joanna’s, a local nightclub. The bar was Wright’s last known location. He disappeared on December 12, 1997.
Grimson and Wright originally met on a fire-training course in November, 1997. Grimson gave Wright his phone number and offered him a ride home. Wright, fearing Grimson was gay, called his family for advice, and nothing came of it. A month later the men shared a taxi back to Grimson’s flat where Grimson sexually attacked Wright. Grimson later claimed the murder was a power kill, not a sexual kill.
It was later revealed that Wright was beaten to death with a baseball bat. His murderer, Allan Michael Grimson, said he punched the air in celebration street killing the teenager. Grimson them slit the victim’s throat and put his body in the apartment bathtub. The killer then wrapped up Wright’s naked body and dumped him. Grimson said he enjoyed the “tingling feeling” he got from the murder.
Sion Jenkins
- December 12, 1998
- Portsmouth
Sion Jenkins was a barman in Portsmouth when, exactly one year after the murder of Wright, he met Grimson at Joanna’s. He accompanied Grimson back to the killer’s flat where Grimson attacked Jenkins. The young man was punched and beaten before, according to Grimson, “agreeing” to have sex.
When Jenkins tried to leave the next morning, Grimson bound him and placed him in the bathtub where he beat Jenkins to death with a baseball bat. Grimson later admitted to covering Jenkins’ head with a towel to avoid a similar mess caused when he murdered Wright. Grimson said he wanted to experience the same “tingling feeling” as the first murder, but said it was not as thrilling.
Jenkins died at the age of 20 on December 13, 1998.
Arrest & Trial
Grimson Arrested
- December 15, 1999
- Portsmouth
Police continued to investigate the cold case of Nicholas Wright. On December 15, 1999, police arrested Grimson and another man on suspicion of his murder. With two days, the second man was released without charges, while Grimson faced a second murder charge. After a day of questioning and a night in the cells, Grimson asked to speak to police. Over the course of hours, he confessed to Wright’s murder.
