The Murders
Clare Letchford
- January 18, 1998
- Cornwallis Gardens, Hastings
Forty-year-old Clare Letchford lived in a basement flat in Cornwallis Gardens, Hastings. On January 18, 1998, firefighters were called out to a fire at her home and they found her body. An investigation showed she had been strangled with shoelaces and a cushion cover was placed over her head. Ultimately she died of smoke inhalation. A piece of her arm was missing.
Beryl Megan Doreen O'Connor
- January 26, 1988
- Holmesdale Gardens, Hastings
On January 26, 1998, Beryl Megan Doreen O’Connor, known as Dornie, was murdered in her flat just 100 yards from where Letchford was killed. Firefighters were called to her home and found the 75-year-old dead. She had been strangled before being set on fire. Like Letchford, she died from asphyxiation from smoke inhalation.
Child Arrested and Released
- February 04, 1998
- Hastings
On February 4, 1998, police arrested a 13-year-old boy in relation to both murders. The unnamed child was held for 48 hours and released on bail to the care of social workers. He was not charged in their deaths. At least three more people were arrested for the deaths before the real killer was charged.
Sex Assaults
- in May 1998
- Eastbourne, East Sussex
In May, 1998, Fisher indecently assaulted two Spanish students at knifepoint in Eastbourne, East Sussex. He confessed years later, in 2008, and was tried and sentenced to a 5-year term.
This is an unusual example of a multiple murder/spree killer de-escalating.
Arrest & Trial
Fisher Charged in Murders
- July 08, 2009
- Crowthorne, Berkshire
Fisher was in Broadmoor, a notorious psychiatric hospital in England, for sex crimes, when he contacted police. He knew he was an ongoing threat to society and wanted to confess to the murders of Letchford and O’Connor. He also admitted trying to rape and kill a Czech student on a train, and to raping a London woman in her home. The student was attacked in the toilet of a train in January, 1998. The vulnerable London woman was attacked In 1991. Police announced his confession on July 8, 2009.
Fisher Guilty
- September 27, 2010
- Lewes Crown Court, Lewes, East Sussex
On September 17, 2010, Fisher was sentenced to 21 years for both charges of manslaughter (based on diminished responsibility) after being found not sane.
