THE DISPATCH
The Beginning
Andrew Cameron came from a well-off family with a home near Royal Troon Golf Club. He was well-known to police as a petty thief with a penchant for breaking into cars.
The Murders
Kay Wyllie
- July 4, 1984
- Dunure, Ayrshire
Kay Wyllie was 19 years old when she and her parents travelled from South Africa to Scotland. Her father had wanted to retire in his home country. Within two months, on July 4, 1984, Wyllie went missing. She was last seen leaving her friend’s house, and her white mini car was found just 500 yards away from her home. Two days later, her body was found in a ditch near Dunure, Ayr by a farm hand. She had been strangled with her own bra. Police later learned that the killer had taken a small ostrich-skin purse and a digital clock, perhaps as trophies. In September, a £1,000 reward was offered for information on her killer.
Nancy Nicol
- May 2, 1985
- Kilmarnock
Nancy Nicol, 18, disappeared from Kilmarnock on her mother’s birthday. Police immediately expressed concern about her disappearance because Wyllie had also disappeared from the same area.
Arrest & Trial
Cameron Arrested, Charged
- May 10, 1985
- Troon, South Ayrshire
Police charged Cameron with the murder of Wyllie on May 10. Cameron, who was being questioned by police about the death of Wyllie, agreed to talk only if he could first lead them to Nicol’s body. At the time, he was not a suspect in Nicol’s disappearance. On May 18, police said Cameron led them to where Nicol’s body had been left. However, police frogmen never found her. On June 1, a father-son team gathering whelks found Nicol. She was covered in seaweed, on rocks off the Royal Troon Open Championship Golf Course. Her body had been revealed during low tide.
Cameron Gets Life
- September 18, 1985
- Edinburgh
On September 18, 1985, Cameron is sentenced to life in jail, with a minimum 20 year term, for the murders of Wyllie and Nicol.
Cameron's Sentence Increased
- July 1, 2002
- Edinburgh
On July 1, 2002, Cameron’s minimum sentence of 20 years was increased to 30 years. This resulted from a European law which required Scots courts to set a minimum “punishment period” before killers could apply for parole.
Cameron's Mother's Funeral
- January 14, 2013
- Edinburgh
On January 14, 2013, Cameron was permitted to attend his mother’s funeral. Although he was handcuffed to a guard, Nicol’s family told media they were angry that he was released, even for a short time, from prison.
Cameron Remains in Prison
In February, 2015, Cameron’s younger brother Rodney was sentenced to four years for a sexual assault and other acts he committed in between 1987 and June 1994. It was thought that Cameron’s crimes and punishment “tipped [him] over the edge”. Andrew Cameron remains in prison as of February, 2022.
